How to get off the Processed food train!

What actually is Processed foods ?

It refers to any food that has been altered from its natural state. This is usually for shelf life, safety or flavour. So let me give you some examples.

  • Freezing

  • Canning

  • Drying

  • Baking

  • Adding preservatives and additives

  • Pasteurising

However some foods can be processed in different ways and these include.

  • Heavily Processed - Sugary cereals, instant noodles, frozen chips/dinners and fizzy drinks

  • Moderately processed -Fresh Bread, Cheese, yoghurt, canned beans

  • Minimally Processed - Washed and cut fruit and vegetables. Salad bag, roasted nuts.

So are these really bad for us?

Not every processed food is totally unhealthy for us but highly processed foods or often described as ultra processed foods are unhealthy for us. They are pumped full of additives, sugars, terribly unhealthy fats and sodium (salt). They usually have no nutritional value and over consumption of these foods can be linked to several health conditions and autoimmune issues. Like obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

Examples of processed foods that aren’t unhealthy for us.

  • Tinned tomatoes

  • Lentils

  • Low salt/sugar baked beans

Ultra processed foods here are the examples.

  • Fast foods

  • Crisps

  • Takeaways

  • Packaged foods ( bakery, cakes, biscuits)

In short, dieting doesn’t work for us in the long term and its usually flipping awful, makes you miserable and is really hard to sustain.

We have enough going on through our journey of peri/menopause so why not do it the easy way.
