Why do we lose more hair the older we get? Is it down to perimenopause?

This is a question that comes up a lot with woman that are going through Perimenopause. There is always talk of other symptoms but crikey, there isn’t much talk about why is it when we brush or wash our hair, we start visibly seeing the hair loss?

So when we hit our 40’s our hair follicles start to shrink leaving us with thinner hair. Sometimes hair loss can start in Perimenopause or later in some. We can notice this when our hair is wet and we can see more scalp that we used to? I know I can for sure.

However although hair loss and the thinning of our hair is often caused with aging. It could also be down to other reasons!

  • Menopause. Another reason why our hormones are so important for our entire bodies is because we have hormone receptors in our hair follicles. So when our hormone levels drop and thats the 3 hormones of Oestrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone this can then lead to hair shedding and hair loss. Some of us notice it over the whole of our scalp and some over the entire body. I have noticed that I don’t have to shave my legs and underarms so much. Which is actually quite good.

But some woman notice that have unwanted hair growing in placing it never used to ????

Like the upper lip and chin. I mean come on for goodness sake!LOL I can say yes I have a pesky hair that appears on the left side of my chin and its like a short piece of wire.

  • Genetics? this could be something hereditary.

  • Skin Conditions like dandruff and scalp disorders can cause hair loss.Like alopecia areata, and Lupus.

  • Telogen effluvium, this is temporary hair loss and can be caused my severe stress, an illness, calorie restriction, thyroid hormone imbalance or iron deficiency

  • Medications, certain. drugs can cause hair loss. Antidepressants, some blood pressure medications and pain killers.

So what do we do now?

If your really struggling and finding that the hair loss is not as small a deal as you first thought. You should book yourself in with a hair loss specialist.

There are medications out there for hair loss but this needs to be discussed with a professional. Every person is individual so what someone else has may not work well enough for you or vice versa.

Use a gentle shampoo, consider anti dandruff shampoo if your have flaky skin and of course a good quality conditioner. Avoid tight hairstyle. Also pulling your hair bak all the time and using a band can worsen it.

Avoid the use of intense drying or heated appliances. As these can damage the hair shafts and make them more prone to splitting. Protect your hair from the sun so the use of a nice sun hat is also helpful. Try and manage your stress and also talk with your hairdresser as they can guide you with some good volume boosting products.

Lastly please make sure you are looking at your diet as well. Eat a well balanced diet. Whole foods everyday if you can. As a sudden drops in calories can have an impact of hair loss.

Be patient with a little love and love. you should be seeing a difference in about 3-6 months.

I am on this journey with you. I have spent som many years bleaching my hair and using heat and product on it on a daily basis. So now is my time to correct some of the damage I have done. My first steps are to sort another way of keeping my hair the colour that I love. and also choosing a style that isn’t such high maintenance as my last. Wish me luck and if your feeling the same with your hair then please comment below or leave a comment in the Private facebook group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/135038279516041
